Now there is a definitive supplement advance that duplicates the natural mineral absorption process in eating plant food. It appears only one company has figured it out. They have reinvented the multivitamin-mineral supplement.
You are going to have to wade through a little science with me, but you’ll see why this is important. No one, until now, has been able identify mineral solubility and availability like this before. An unexpected connection to free radicals was found while researching the mineral issue. This is a revolutionary finding – something every vitamin and mineral supplement user should know.
Here’s a quick expose on free radicals (no political pun intended). They are unstable molecules in the body; a powerful and destructive counter-life force, ultimately causing disease if left unchecked. Free radicals are caused from normal metabolism and environmental factors such as pollution, smoke, radiation and herbicides. The damage accumulates with age.
Nature provided a resolve – antioxidants – vitamins A, C, and E and others. They essentially neutralize free radicals. This latest scientific find has uncovered that minerals in traditional multivitamins tend to “crystallize” in the intestines, making them difficult to absorb.
This is not all. Here’s the connection to free radicals. These crystallized minerals cause an increase in free radicals. When this happens, the antioxidants end up neutralizing the free radicals in the intestines, robbing them of some of their potency before they can be absorbed. This is an incredible find. The antioxidants and minerals are essentially wasted fighting a battle outside of the body cells.
I hope this makes sense – it is so important. The two largest selling brands of multivitamins, Centrum and One-A- Day, have mineral solubility and availability that is under 10%, in comparison to over 85% for this new generation product.
Let’s look at protection against free radical generation from minerals. The mineral form of copper, as an example, used by Centrum and One-A-Day provides no protection against the formation of free radicals. This new generation product has a protection rate in excess of 75% - substantially more than the forms used by other manufacturers including: GNC, Usana, Pharmanex and others. I can get you the study information if you want it.
The choice seems easy and this new product is not expensive. You can get it for a price you might expect to pay at one of the big discount warehouses for a lesser product.

Not All Vitamin/Mineral Supplements Are Equal
Here’s my follow-up – still focusing on minerals for now. Since, even eating “right” may not provide all that we need; supplementation is the only realistic answer.
Now hold on, not all supplements have been created equal. Here’s what I have found:
The absorption rate for “low-tech” mineral supplements, the discounted, super inexpensive kind is reported to be in the range of 5-10%. Sounds like they pass right on through with little benefit.
If some scientific manipulating has been done, like chelation or citration, that amounts to combining them with enzymes or other nutrients the body needs - the suggested rate rises to 25-30%. That’s a big improvement, but still not what we need. I’ve been using a supplement that uses fructose compounding – attaching minerals to fructose molecules. The body cells love fructose – instant energy – they gobble them up and in so doing the cells also take in the mineral. An article I read said that absorption could be as high as 80%+ in this form. But, there has been no science that could identify this number.
Hold on! The company I have been buying my supplements from has announced a scientific breakthrough that no other business has or can duplicate. I’ll report on it in my next posting.

A Red Flag Issue
Everyone should be taking note of this. An article from 2002 in the Journal of the American Medical Association recommends that everyone take a daily multi-vitamin. Here’s why –
As few as 20% of adults eat the recommend daily number of servings of fruits and vegetables. I also found a study that says that the soil in the USA has suffered mineral depletion as high as 85%. This is a health crisis all by itself, because our bodies have been designed to get the minerals we need from plant matter. If the minerals aren’t in the soil, the plants won’t have them. You can see where this is going.
Focusing on minerals – here’s a sampling of what minerals do for us:
Boron – enhances the body’s ability to absorb calcium and magnesium
Calcium – strong bones, muscle and teeth, as well as heart activity
Magnesium – energy and strong bones
Chromium – carbohydrate metabolism
Copper – antioxidant protection, energy, red blood cell formation
Iodine – energy and thyroid gland support
Iron – energy, antioxidant protection, oxygen delivery to all parts of the body
Manganese – energy and antioxidant protection
Molybdenum – amino acid metabolism
Phosphorus – energy, bones and teeth
Selenium – antioxidant protection
Zinc – immune system, antioxidant protection, protein production
Will any vitamin or mineral supplement do the job? The answer is NO! The supplement has to mirror the way minerals are naturally found in fruits and vegetables. I’ll let you know what I’ve found in my next posting.
